Levi Stubbs (born Levi Stubbles) the lead vocalist of the Motown group The Four Tops, has died in his sleep at the age of 72.

Levi has suffered from ill-health for several years - he was diagnosed with cancer in 1995 and later suffered a stroke, which forced him to stop touring. He leaves only one surviving original member (Abdul Fakir) of The Four Tops, who had sold more than 50 million records worldwide.

He was also known as an actor and famously provided the voice of the man-eating plant, Audrey II, in the 1986 film The Little Shop of Horrors.

He leaves behind him his wife Clineice, whom he married in 1960 and five children and 11 grandchildren. He was also the cousin of soul singer Jackie Wilson.

He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and his millions of fans worldwide.

Watching the Live-aid concert at JFK is just tremendous. Levi's singing is exciting, and has special written all over it. He has huge charisma that no one can match, no way. Aretha Franklin said that Levi was a world class man and you can see that in the various youtube clips the way he interacts with his bandmates and others.

Watching the singoffs between the temptations and four tops, it is clear that Levi is the star of the show because his singing and personality dazzle.

I belatedly extend my condolences to his wife and family. It seems the best are always confronted with hardship and suffering. Its a damn shame because you see Duke has reconstituted the Four Tops and he continues to enjoy touring.I wonder if anything else led to his strokes, other than what is known. Its too bad. He was unique performer without any doubt. What can one do.

Another great voice in Heaven

With a soulful voice, a winning smile, and radiating love, Levi was a
member of a brotherhood "The Four Tops"... he never wanted to go on to be ahead of his "brothers in music". I'm sure he was a humble and loving person, that's what I get from his music and his personality.
Levi and his Tops made some of the best Soul, Pop and Motown music
ever, with those beautiful voices....Levi and the Tops who passed before you are sorely missed. Duke Fakir, keep on keepin' on.

One oft the greatest soul singers

In my oppinion Levi Stubbs was one of the greatest soul singers ever. To me his voice was on the same level with Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin or Al Green. His voice and interpretation had a great amount to the success of the four tops.

Because he was "only" a group member, his achievement is highly underrared in public. But to me it's a sign of characters and great personality, that he did' nt went away from the "Four Tops", to start a solo career.

He was a big man and wonderful musician. R.IP. Levi, your music will live forever.

Family member's miss your voice.

Not too many people can have a famous singer in the family. The song "Bernadette" was a big influence on my parents my sister was named after that song. Not only because we are related but that song had true meaning and feelings, your voice on that song was powerful, emotional and right in tune. The four tops will always live in my household and Levi you will always have a place in my heart.

Thank you so much !!
